A Letter From Our President

What if there was a place on campus where everyone was treated equally the moment they walked through the door?

What if there was a place where even as a first-year student your voice was just as important as that of the most respected seniors?

What if there was a place where like-minded men came together and utilized their diverse skills to create something better, something more?

Drake University has this place, and it is Sigma Phi Epsilon, where the typical college fraternity is anything but typical.

While the above may sound like an alluring advertisement in your typical college junk mail, I assure you that it is much more than that. The men who make up Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) are an eclectic crew. Many of the men in our chapter never saw themselves joining a fraternity, others did.

Here at the Iowa Delta chapter of SigEp, we constantly strive for more—pushing ourselves academically and physically. The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon pride themselves on the Balanced Man ideal—learning everyday to strike a balance between the concepts of Sound Mind and Sound Body in order to become healthy, educated, equipped and better-rounded leaders for the world’s communities.

SigEp is the only non-pledging, substance-free fraternity on campus, a distinction we take pride in. Inspired by the tenets of virtue, diligence and brotherly love we treat our members with respect and as equals from day one. Each year the brothers band together to do good in a collegiate world that often inspires young men to learn what not to do as opposed to what is right to do. This past year we raised $11,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through our annual Queen of Hearts softball tournament in honor of Brother Eric Grunzinger, who succumbed to the disease in 2001. Throughout the year we participate in numerous philanthropies and community service projects, giving back to a community that has given us so much.

Our other big philanthropic endeavor is the Combat Hunger Food Drive.  For eight years running, SigEp has donated the most money, collected and donated the most food, and given more man hours than all the other fraternities, combined.  Members are also very involved on campus with 5 senators, editors of campus publications, PMACs and orientation leaders.

Iowa Delta is a Residential Learning Community (RLC), which means we treat our house as not just a home, but as an educational facility as well. With the culmination of our $800,000 capital campaign to fully renovate our house we are more able to realize this vision. We have numerous speakers come visit, including nationally renowned leadership expert Barry Posner of Santa Clara University, whose leadership model inspired Drake’s own Don Adam’s Leadership Academy. This year we will dedicate whole months to discovering a topic—whether teaching our members how to invest and play the stock market or learning about science and criminology at the city morgue.

Through intramural sports, engaging intellectual discussions, a thriving social environment and the numerous opportunities to learn about yourself and others, SigEp is a life changing organization that will always challenge you to achieve more and never settle.

Our founders declared “this fraternity will be different.” With each passing day we strive to shatter to pieces the Animal House stereotype. SigEp is different and never strives to be “normal.”

“Normal” isn’t good enough—the men of SigEp always strive to be “exceptional.”

We pursue this goal each and every day and offer our experiences and guidance to every member who walks through our red doors.  I encourage you to take a look within our website and to get a better idea of how we set ourselves apart through our quest to redefine what it means to be part of a fraternity, and why every brother is proud to call himself a SigEp.

Sincerely,

Mark Micheli
